Travel Well Inclusive Bike Library Case Study
Cycling is a fantastic way to stay active, with the added benefit of helping you get from point A to point B. Not only does cycling contribute to recommended daily exercise, but research shows it also enhances both mental and physical well-being. Regular cycling reduces the risk of serious health conditions like cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and obesity—illnesses that cost the NHS millions of pounds each year to treat.
In 2023, Active Travel England launched the ‘Cycling and Walking on Prescription Fund,’ selecting 11 locations to pilot this initiative aimed at expanding access to cycling. Nottingham City Council was among the recipients of this funding and has been actively implementing the Travel Well Project over the past year. As part of their ongoing efforts, the team is now working on developing an Inclusive E-Bike Library.
The Electric Bike Shop was pleased to support the Travel Well team by adding two Tern GSD e-bikes to their fleet. These bikes are specially designed to carry items like shopping or transport up to two children. Given the proximity of our Nottingham store, we were thrilled to be asked to provide a green delivery service, personally riding the bikes to their new home alongside Travel Well Officer, Samuel Shoesmith.
Samuel Shoesmith, Travel Well Project Officer, shared:
"I am delighted to have collaborated with The Electric Bike Shop. They were incredibly helpful in our search for a local supplier of Tern bikes. It's fantastic that they could facilitate a ‘green’ delivery from their West Bridgford shop to our base at Harvey Hadden. The bikes we've acquired will be instrumental in supporting local residents who are ‘prescribed’ active travel. This project, funded by Active Travel England, aims to explore whether active travel referrals can genuinely improve lives. Our Project, called Travel Well, will soon be launching the e-bike library, for residents can loan a variety of adapted bikes."
